We successfully conducted a 10-month Maternal and Child Health Training Program from September 2024 to June 2025, hosted primarily at Mae Tao Clinic in Mae Sot, Thailand, with additional internship placements across field clinics.
A total of 25 participants were trained to deliver essential maternal and child healthcare services in underserved communities along the Thai-Myanmar border.
The program equipped trainees with the skills to provide:
Antenatal and postnatal care
Management of medical and high-risk pregnancies
Safe delivery and emergency obstetric care
Child healthcare, including IMCI, nutrition, developmental care, newborn resuscitation, and routine immunization
Family planning counseling and services
Basic nursing procedures and community health care
Internship placements allowed trainees to apply their knowledge in real-world settings, delivering hands-on care while refining bedside manners and clinical protocols.
Participants engaged through:
Lectures
Small group discussions
Demonstrations
Role-playing exercises
Key topics included:
Normal labor and delivery
Obstetric emergencies
Pediatric care (IMCI, HBB, ECSB, ECEB)
Pharmacology and immunization
Early childhood development and nutrition
Additional resources such as PowerPoints, checklists, flowcharts, and reference books supported learning.
Graduates gained both theoretical knowledge and practical experience, becoming capable of delivering comprehensive maternal and child healthcare. The program also emphasized leadership and professionalism, preparing trainees to serve confidently in remote clinic settings.
Despite facing logistical and political challenges—including delays due to border security and transportation limitations—the trainees successfully completed their field internships and fulfilled their clinical requirements.
