Monitoring & Evaluation Activities

In 2023, the Burma Medical Association (BMA) focused on enhancing organizational Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) activities to improve healthcare quality and accessibility in Burma’s ethnic and border areas. Our comprehensive M&E efforts aimed to assess our achievements, identify challenges, and provide strategic recommendations for future improvements.

Key Activities and Achievements

Target Setting

Established measurable targets based on baseline data, aligning with health priorities and community needs.

Monitoring and Progress Tracking

Regularly monitored project progress to ensure alignment with set targets. However, it us utilized Health Information Systems (HIS) to track key health indicators and service delivery metrics.

M&E Assessments through Site Visits

Conducted M&E trips to project sites to assess human resources, infrastructure, service delivery, infection prevention and control, pharmacy management, and data quality assurance. Gathered insights from health worker and patient interviews.

Reporting and Coordination

Prepared quarterly reports summarizing progress, challenges, and lessons learned. Then, participated in coordination meetings with local and international stakeholders to discuss progress and make strategic adjustments.

Training and Capacity Building

Delivered HIS and basic M&E training sessions for healthcare professionals. Enhanced the capacity of Village and Township Health Centers (VTHCs) staff through targeted training programs.

Onsite Supervision and On-Job Training

Conducted regular supervision visits to VTHCs. Provided on-the-job training to staff, addressing operational challenges and offering technical assistance.

Quality Improvement (QI) Initiatives

Performed virtual and onsite QI assessments, including logbook and desk reviews to ensure data accuracy and implemented corrective actions based on assessment findings. Organized Continuous Medical Education (CME) sessions both virtually and in-person to improve staff competency.

Birth Records and Health Indicators

Recorded and compiled birth records across VTHCs. Tracked key health indicators for health service coverage and conducted quarterly evaluations.

Challenges and Lessons Learned

Limited resources and data collection inconsistencies, Accessibility issues in remote areas. Flexible strategies and continuous training are crucial, Enhanced stakeholder engagement is necessary, improving data management systems boosts data quality and reliability, Increasing the frequency of QI assessments and supervision visits is beneficial, expanding training programs to cover more healthcare professionals is essential.

Methodology

Our M&E methodology combined quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data were collected through surveys, HIS, and field visits. Both virtual and onsite assessments were conducted to ensure comprehensive evaluation.

Looking Ahead

The BMA’s focused M&E efforts in 2023 have provided significant insights into our progress and areas for improvement. By refining our strategies, enhancing training, and strengthening stakeholder collaboration, we aim to further improve healthcare delivery in Burma’s underserved regions.
